Environmental outcomes

The Logan Enhancement Project is located within the Queensland Government’s designated ecological and conservation corridor (or green belt) linking the Karawatha Forest to the Flinders Range.

Recognising the importance of this green belt and the environmental significance of the surrounding bushland and wetlands, Transurban Queensland formed an Environmental Reference Group (ERG) to improve environmental outcomes of the project.

The ERG is comprised of six local environmental groups, who share their views on how to best maintain and enhance fauna around the road network.

The final concept design

As a result of this innovative process, the following initiatives to improve fauna connectivity have been included in the project’s final concept design:

Compton Road:

  • a fauna underpass (through existing culverts) linking the existing Compton Road fauna overpass and the creek crossing under the Gateway Extension Motorway south of Compton Road
  • fauna fencing to keep fauna off the motorway.

Scrubby Creek Bridge underpass at the Gateway Extension Motorway:

  • dry animal access paths either side of Scrubby Creek
  • fauna refuge poles and fencing
  • maintaining a 2.5 metre gap between bridge widenings to preserve vegetation
  • rope bridge and landscaping suitable for gliders.

Scrubby Creek culverts under the Logan Motorway adjacent to the Wembley Road on and off-ramps:

  • a dry cell passage through the culverts under the Logan Motorway, Wembley Road exit-ramp and across Wembley Road
  • a waterway link from the Berrinba Wetlands through the culverts under the Logan Motorway, Wembley Road off-ramp and across Wembley Road
  • fauna refuge poles and fauna friendly fencing.

Illaweena Street west of the Gateway Extension Motorway:

  • a fauna overpass to accommodate north – south fauna movements
  • fauna friendly fencing along Illaweena Street between the Gateway Extension Motorway and Stretton College
  • plantings to encourage fauna movements
  • use of glider poles and refuge poles.

Illaweena Street east of the Gateway Extension Motorway:

  • glider poles and rope bridges
  • fauna warning signage to increase driver awareness about the presence of fauna in the area.
  • Gateway Extension Motorway at the southern side of Illaweena Street underpass:
  • a fauna underpass to encourage east – west fauna movements
  • fauna friendly fencing along Illaweena Street east of the motorway.

Logan Motorway between Mt Lindesay Highway and the Gateway Extension Motorway:

  • a fauna underpass to encourage north – south fauna movements
  • fauna friendly fencing
  • plantings to encourage fauna movements.

Beaudesert Road north of the Logan Motorway:

  • a fauna underpass to accommodate east – west fauna movements
  • fauna friendly fencing
  • plantings to encourage fauna movements
  • koala refuge and climbing poles
  • above road rope bridge.

Logan Motorway west of the Mt Lindesay Highway:

  • a fauna underpass to accommodate north – south fauna movements
  • fauna friendly fencing
  • plantings to encourage fauna movements.

Mt Lindesay Highway:

  • rope bridge to accommodate fauna movements.

In addition to the above, fauna escape poles will be installed every 400 metres to allow fauna to safely exit the motorway corridor.
